Chenkal Panchayat: An Agricultural Village on the Path of Development
Chenkal Panchayat, located in the Thiruvananthapuram district, is a region renowned for its agricultural prosperity and unique industries. More than 60% of the people in the Panchayat are engaged in agriculture, forming the backbone of its economic structure.
Agricultural Sector:
The water available from the Neyyar and Vandichira canal greatly benefits the agricultural sector. While rice is the main crop, coconut, tapioca, banana, vegetables, and betel vine are also widely cultivated. Pulses, tubers, and sesame are grown as intercrops. Vlathankara, Thrikkannapuram, Maryapuram, Kudumbottukonam, Arayoor, Vaniyankala, and Kuzhichani are famous for vegetable cultivation. However, rice cultivation is currently declining. Agriculture here primarily depends on rainfall.
Industrial Sector:
Although industrially backward, Chenkal Panchayat has some unique small-scale industries:
- Beekeeping: In Kerala, the state that produces the most honey in India, Kodankara in Chenkal Panchayat is famous for honey production.
- Handloom Industry: There are many individuals who own and operate handlooms here.
- Other Industries: Products related to palm leaves, matchstick industry, handicrafts, grass mat products, pottery industry, and brick manufacturing are also found here.
- The jaggery industry, which was once prominent, has now declined due to the cutting down of palm trees.
Transportation, Education, and Health:
- Transportation: National Highway 47 (NH-47) passes through the northern part of the Panchayat. The Kanyakumari-Thiruvananthapuram railway line also runs close to the Panchayat.
- Drinking Water: 85% of the Panchayat's population depends on wells for drinking water. 45% of the area experiences severe water scarcity.
- Health: The Chenkal Primary Health Centre, established in 1977, is the first modern medical facility in the Panchayat. The Sethulakshmipuram Public Market in Udiyankulangara is an important trade center.
- Education: Primary education began here more than a century ago. Vrindavan High School (established in 1951) is the first high school in the Panchayat. The people here are at the forefront in terms of education and culture.
Chenkal Panchayat is a village that is progressing in social, cultural, and educational fields, with a strong focus on agriculture and small-scale industries.
