Chenkal Maheswaram Sri Shiva Parvathy Temple
The Chenkal Maheswaram Sivaparvathi Temple, near Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram, houses the world's largest Sivalinga. This temple, constructed entirely of black stone and wood, adheres to traditional Kerala temple architecture and Vastu Shastra.
The temple's design stands out from other temples in Kerala. The entrance to the Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) features an elaborate depiction of the entire zodiac, symbolizing that Shiva and Parvathi control the entire universe. The temple has four entrances, each topped with a gopuram (tower).
Previously, the Kolar Koti Lingeswara Temple in Karnataka, with its 108-foot-tall Sivalinga, held the record for the largest Sivalinga. The Chenkal Sivalinga surpasses this, entering the world record with a height of 111 feet and a circumference of 111 feet.
Entry into the Sivalinga requires a ticket of 100 rupees. Photography is not allowed inside. Mobile phones, bags, and other belongings must be deposited in the cloakroom before entering. The interior of the Sivalinga is arranged into 8 mandapams (halls) across 8 floors. The journey inside the Sivalinga is designed to feel like entering a cave. The interior is adorned with murals and idols. The topmost floor is designed to represent Kailasam.
