Situated in Thiruvananthapuram district, Chenkal Panchayat is a region renowned for its agricultural prosperity and unique industries. More than 60% of the people in the panchayat are engaged in agriculture, which is the backbone of its economic structure.

Agricultural Sector

Water received from Neyyar and Vandichirathodu is immensely beneficial to the agricultural sector. Although paddy is the primary crop, coconut, tapioca, banana, vegetables, and betel vine are also widely cultivated. Pulses, tuber crops, and sesame are cultivated as intercrops.

Industrial Sector

Although industrially backward, Chenkal Panchayat has some unique small-scale industries:

• Beekeeping: In Kerala, the state with the highest honey production in India, Kodankara in Chenkal Panchayat is a well-known place for honey production.
• Handloom Industry: There are individuals here who own and operate handlooms.
• Other Industries: Palm leaf-related products, matchbox industry, handicrafts, grass mat products, pottery, and brick manufacturing can also be found here.

The once prominent karupatti (palm jaggery) industry has now declined due to the cutting down of palm trees.

Transportation, Education, and Health

• Transportation: National Highway 47 (NH-47) passes through the northern part of the panchayat. The Kanyakumari-Thiruvananthapuram railway line also runs close to the panchayat.
• Drinking Water: 85% of the population in the panchayat relies on wells. Severe drinking water scarcity exists in 45% of the area.
• Health: Established in 1977, the Chenkal Primary Health Centre is the first modern medical care center in the panchayat. Sethulakshmipuram Public Market in Udayankulangara is a major trading center.
• Education: Primary education started here a century ago. Vrindavan High School (established in 1951) is the first high school in the panchayat. The local population is at the forefront educationally and culturally.
